| Wildly popular in the 1970s and 80s, Transcendental Meditation (TM) continues to be one of the most accessible forms of Eastern spiritual practice in the West. But does it live up to its hype? In this objective exploration of TM, consciousness researcher John White looks at what’s billed as "a simple, natural, and effortless mental technique, practiced twenty minutes a day" and takes on its critics as well as its cheerleaders. White explains what it’s like to take a trip through the "mountains of mind," the purpose of mantras, whether the Maharishi is enlightened, and what science says about consciousness-raising. He also provides a glossary of TM terms and a "how-to" lesson so readers can try it themselves. |

Jason A. Salyers: Garbage! |
| Don't waste your money on this book! The price of TM is becoming more and more affordable and so if you can't afford it now then just wait a year because they are focusing on making it more obtainable now that they've built a strong foundation of people who are dedicated meditators and so can now afford to reach out and offer Maharishi's powerful techniques to the rest of mankind. During the early 60's TM flooded the market, which was necessary for that time but then after that they raised the price for only the dedicated and the rich, that is now changing as we about to enter Sat Yuga. And like the other reviewers you can not learn to transcend from a book just like you can't learn to effectively swim from a book, it needs an experienced and educated teacher to show you the ropes in a specific manner so that it does not become twisted by the intellect or ego. If I could recommend one book to anyone who is considering taking this life transforming step then it would be this: Science of Being and Art of Living: Transcendental Meditation |

lighthousekeeper108: Rather useless book on meditation--superficial, unbalanced and misleading |
The author seems unqualified to write about meditation. What are his credentials? He did not formally study TM, was not trained as a TM teacher, and is not a scientist who can comment with authority on the research. As other reviewers have noted, he's just written another commercial book to "cash in" on the popularity and success of TM. I have been enjoying TM for over 30 years, and I found his interpretations amiss in many ways, not just intellectually but factually. He just gets it wrong. The most glaring flaw is that you cannot learn the TM technique from a book--only from a certified teacher trained in the correct instructional process. You can learn lesser effective facsimiles, but not the real thing.
Also, if you know anything about TM, several of the reviews here promoting this book sound disingenuous and untrustworthy, as if written not by innocent readers but by people with an agenda (i.e., to promote the book, to bash TM, etc.). TM doesn't cost $2500, but much less, and there are reduced rates and scholarships for anyone who cannot afford the standard course tuition. To learn the facts about TM, I suggest the official TM Website (not Wikipedia, which currently has been hijacked by axe-grinding skeptics and naysayers), or going to an introductory lecture. The best books about TM are Maharishi's books--great expressions of universal truth about meditation and about life. If you're scientifically inclined, you can search PubMed online for the research studies, many of them comparing effects of the various meditation techniques. Best of luck in your research! |

H. Coppola: needs to be updated |
| Like other critics have mentioned this book is simplistic and a dull read. Besides these faults, it lack depth and character. The author cites research from the 70's. When this book was reprinted in 2004 it should have been updated and expanded. I would have been interested to read about how TM is used today. Waste of time and money. |

David Haworth: cannot learn TM from a book |
| As I learned TM 37 years ago, it became clear why it could not be learned from a book. It is totally simple, but each person is unique and has different ways of not keeping it simple! As Maharishi noted, your teacher should take some interest in you, which of course, an author is not. (Lots of things we cannot learn from books. That's why schools have teachers.) |

Julian: Lame and not TM at all. |
If you want a good book about Transcendental Meditation read the one by film maker David Lynch:
Catching the Big Fish: Meditation, Consciousness, and Creativity
John White by authoring this book is trying to cash in on the fact that TM is famous but is actually doing an incredible disservice to the reader by leading them to believe they are doing TM. He wants to make money talking and writing about TM but he is not a teacher of TM. Unfortunately his book and its title is just confusing and misleading.
I applaud the author for focusing on something so incredibly important and almost unknown in the world but....
The simple fact is you cannot learn to transcend thought by reading a book because by its nature reading is thinking. This has been tried myriad times in the past and it just doesn't work.
Anyone can teach meditation. Meditation just means thinking. Concentration, contemplation, and meditation are all just different flavors of thinking.
Transcending thought is the real deal. Save your time and money and find a real certified teacher of TM and learn to transcend meditation. |
